UK transit formalities
If you are traveling to a third country with a stopover in the UK, you may need a transit visa. This type of visa allows connecting passengers to pass through an airport or change terminals without remaining on British territory.
For simple transit through the UK, in most cases it is not necessary to obtain a transit visa. You can apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization by completing the ETA form online.
What is a transit visa for stopovers in the UK?
The UK transit visa is an official document which allows foreign nationals to transit the UK without staying permanently. It is compulsory for certain passengers, depending on their nationality, itinerary and type of transit.
The two types of British transit visa
Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV)
This visa is required if you :
- Stay in the international zone of a UK airport
- Don’t go through immigration control
- Have a connecting flight within 24 hours
- No need to collect your luggage or change airports
Visitor in Transit Visa
This visa is required if you :
- Need to leave the international zone (change of terminal, airport, baggage claim…)
- Transit through the UK for less than 48 hours
- Wish to make a short stopover (quick city visit between two flights)

Fees for UK transit visas vary according to several factors, including your place of residence and the type of visa you are applying for. Visa fees and length of stay are :

Who needs a UK transit visa?
The need for a visa depends on several criteria:
✅ You do NOT need a transit visa if :
- You are a citizen of a visa-exempt country (e.g. EU, USA, Canada, Australia…)
- You hold a valid UK visa or residence permit for the USA, Canada, New Zealand, Australia or an EU/EEA country, and are traveling to or from that country.
- You hold an ETA electronic travel authorization, in certain cases
❌ You need a transit visa if :
- You are a national of a country requiring a visa (e.g. India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Ghana, Egypt…)
- You do not meet the above exemption conditions
- Your transit involves changing airports or leaving the international zone

How long does it take to obtain a UK transit visa?
Processing a transit visa application usually takes about 3 weeks after the biometric appointment. It is advisable toapply at least one month in advance of your trip.
